Employment in Netherlands
Employ in the Netherlands without establishing a local entity
Nine million professionals in the Dutch workforce, most of them fluent in at least two languages. Rotterdam is Europe’s busiest port. Amsterdam and Eindhoven pull tech talent from across the continent. The Netherlands consistently ranks top 5 globally for doing business — but that ranking doesn’t translate to simple employment compliance.
Dutch labor law is protective, layered, and full of catches for outsiders. Collective labor agreements (CAOs) are mandatory in many sectors. If your employee’s industry has a bedrijfstakpensioenfonds, pension enrollment isn’t optional. And you can’t simply terminate someone — you need either UWV approval or kantonrechter court permission.

Paid annual leave is statutory. Public holidays sit on top of that entitlement.
The Netherlands applies a progressive Corporate Income Tax (CIT) system with different rates depending on the level of taxable profit. Lower profits are taxed at a reduced rate, while profits exceeding the statutory threshold are subject to a higher standard rate. Companies must also assess VAT, wage tax, and transfer pricing obligations depending on their activities and group structure.
Notice and severance follow the labour code and the contract. Gini calculates the balance at offboarding.

Termination Protections
This is where the Netherlands gets strict. You need UWV approval (economic reasons, long-term illness) or kantonrechter court permission (personal grounds) to fire someone. The transition payment (transitievergoeding) — 1/3 monthly salary per year of service — is owed in every employer-initiated termination, no exceptions.
